here with a look at the numbers, jason brooks. he's got the latest. are you there? >> reporter: frank, a tough way to get in the way when you have standard & poor saying you've got a two-year deadline, washington d.c., to figure out a credible budget plan or the country's triple a debt rating could be downgraded. that would be a very serious issue for the country to pay its long-term debt. numbers have improved a little bit since erlgier, the dow was lower by over 200 points, now it's down by 154. the s&p is down by 15. just a general selloff because of the report. the united states is only one of 120 countries that has a rating and it pays very low interest on its debt. if the rating is downgraded, those interest rates would go higher meaning it would cost more to service its debt. we're looking at a debt ceiling of $14.3 trillion dollars. when the field yield on the 10 -- when the yield on a 10-year note, that means mortgage rates goes up, consumer loans, businesses would be looking at higher borrowing fees and that could force them to curtail some hiring plans. s

here now to talk about it, jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a european summit today on that region's debt crisis going to be critical to see some sort of plan emerge to creditably attack what's happening over there. there are early reports that at least some of the various parliaments in different countries are approving and expanded bailout fund, then various private investors are going to have to agree to take bigger losses on their greek debt. that's been driving the market up and down for months. it will continue to do so until the market feels that there is a solid plan in place. decent sign on the economy in the united states. durable goods orders although they fell by .8% in september, that was mainly because of a big drop in aircraft orders which swing wildly month to month. if you look at the core rate outside of transportation, orders were up 1.7%. and another key factor, business investment was up by 2.4%, good to see businesses still investing their money. that too is helping out the market.

here to explain what the numbers all mean, jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. okay, fill us in jason. >> frank and grace, you can get absolute motion sickness when you follow the stock market. i mean, it tends to go that way. it's been a rough day for the most part. still not looking all that good. but we just got word that the greek government has reached an agreement with the european union and the international monetary fund on five-year austerity plan. it doesn't clear everything with the greek debt crisis. parliament still has to pass $40 billion in budget cuts next week. it's not in the clear but it's a positive move and that's helped the market. the dow is down by 1112. sounds awful but that's about a 57-point improvement -- 75- point improvement in the past five minutes. nasdaq up by 6. s&p down by 9. we have a lot of other head winds out there which are hurting the market, as well. we had another jump in weekly jobless claims up 9,000 to 429,000. they have been above 400,000 now for 11 straight weeks. anything above 400,000 indicates that we are not re

here's jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. jason, it's a good day if you own apple stock, right? >> reporter: stop me if you have heard had before. another blockbuster quarter for apple and another lackluster quarter for yahoo. that's exactly what we saw again in the 2nd quarter. apple blowing away expectations. profit more than doubling to $7.3 billion. revenue up 82% to $28.6 billion. these were record quarterly numbers for apple. they sold more than 20 million iphones. 9.3million ipads in the quarter. the numbers just continue to get better. then you have yahoo. now, their earnings were pretty much in line with expectations at $237 million on the profit side. but revenue was lower than a year ago. $1.08billion. the key, key metric for yahoo fell in the latest quarter that's display advertising revenue. and it's continuing to fall further behind google and facebook is really gaining some ground on yahoo. that's been yahoo's bread and butter for a long time putting more pressure on carol bartz. apple shares are higher by 3.5%
